The island of Brač (also know under the name of Brac) is the largest island belonging to the group of islands of Dalmatia in Croatia which is also the third largest group of Adriatic islands covering an area of 394.57 square kilometers. With a population of 13,824 inhabitants, the island is separated from the Mainland by the Brac Channel, from the island of Solta by the “door of Split” and Hvar by the Hvar channel.
The highest point of the island is Vidova gora (778m) which is also the highest peak of all Croatian islands. The Landscape is dominated by limestone, countless canals, wild valleys and stunning coves.
During centuries, Brac was a source of stone for the construction of decorations on buildings especially because of its rocky environment. Even the Romans knew its quality and used the stone to build entire cities, amphitheatres, palaces and tombs throughout Dalmatia.
On the island there is no surface water flow and the only permanent sources of water are located near Bol. The highest parts of the island (above 400 m) are often covered with Aleppo pine forests which are compact and dark. Forests of Aleppo pine are common to all cities and villages of coastal Croatia.
Pučišća and Supetar are the highest places of the island. Local products are mainly olive oil, wine and fruit and the main activities are farming and fishing.
Traffic is well organized: the ferries facilitate the relationship Split – Supetar and Makarska – Sumartin while shipping companies are more developed and allow tourists to reach easily Supetar and Bol. Brac Airport (which is only used for small planes) is located near Bol.
